Re-discussion on the South Fortress of Dunhuang in Han Dynasties
Dunhuang,as a county in ancient China,is the frontier fortress and provision base for Han Dynasties in governing western region. As for defence system, the north fortress(Great Wall built in Han Dynasties)of Dunhuang is well known, but the location of its south fortress was still a mystery for a long time. With the project"Survey and Research on Yangguan Relics"and the excavation of ancient wooden records,we can not only make a guess on the management methods of south fortress in Dunhuang, but also make a relatively solid guess that the actual governance territory of south fortress in Dunhuang is in northern slope of A-erh-chin Mountains, which is about 50 kilometers south of the fortress. With the re-discussion of the location, the previous opinion of the borderline between Yangguan Magistrate and Yumen Magistrate should be re-discussed,which is of extremely important significance on the research of history and geographical situation of Dunhuang.
