The Adventure of Decline:Writing of Aging in Glück's Collection Faithful and Virtuous Night
"Aging"is the central theme of Louise Glü ck's late collections of poems and in her review of Faithful and Virtuous Night, and the poet claims that it undertakes a grand adventure of"decline".This paper attempts to take the collection of Faithful and Virtuous Night as the main text for a close reading, exploring how the poet presents the theme of"aging"and how this theme reflects the inner world of the poet in her old age.Combining formal poetics and cultural poetics, the article argues that the poet focuses on the metaphor of"traveling",constantly reusing imagery and integrating her own experience in her old age to show the internal and external difficulties faced by"human beings",such as physical deterioration and depletion of inspiration. The poet's writing on aging, either deliberately or metaphorically,is an unremitting reflection on life and art.
