Investigation on Tribute Exchange between Gaochang Uygur Dynasty and Central Plains Dynasties
During the era of Five Dynasties,Gaochang Uygur Dynasty began to send envoys to Central Plains Dynasties with a great deal of presents in the first year of Guangshun Reign in the Later Zhou Dynasty(951 AD),thus beginning the trade exchange in the name of paying tribute. After the founding of Northern Song Dynasty,Gaochang Uygur Dynasty also actively sent envoys to the central plains to establish friendly tribute relationship. The Northern Song Dynasty also sent some large-scale missions to Gaochang, which showed the former's paying great attention to the latter. After that,Qiuci Uygur Dynasty became the political representative of Uygur groups in Western Regions and it frequently sent envoys to central plains. With incomplete statistics, during the about 100 years of reign from Emperor Taizong to Emperor Shenzong of Northern Song Dynasty,Qiuci Uygur Dynasty sent more than 20 missions to pay tribute. The basic principle of the Song Dynasties in treating the tribute from ethnic groups is"to take less and to give more",so we can deduce that when the Qiuci Uygur Dynasty sent the mission with so many goods the tribute was to some extent can be classified as economic trade.
