Notes on Zhang Yichao's Trapped in Chang'an as Seen in the Chang'an Tomb Inscription
The brothers Zhang Yitan and Yi Chao supported each other, laying the foundation of the Guiyi Regime, and surrendered to the Tang Dynasty. However, the Tang government was not at ease. After Zhang Yitan was taken hostage,Zhang Yichao also voluntarily entered Chang'an to accept house arrest under the persuasion of Tang Dynasty Marshal Li Xingsu. This can be seen as the result of the Tang Dynasty's top-level operation in the northwest frontier, but in fact it was also triggered by the conflict between the Yichao and Yitan factions. At the beginning of the establishment of the Guiyi Regime,Zhang Yitan was appointed as the governor of Guazhou and was later promoted by his son,Jiedushi Zhang Huaishen,as the governor of Shazhou, with the intention of proclaiming that the power of Shazhou originally belonged to the Zhang Yitan clique.According to the Epitaph of Zhang Huaicheng,Zhang Yitan had already passed away in the early Xiantong period, but there was no mention of his death in Dunhuang documents. This happened because Zhang Yichao and Zhang Huaishen, who had successively held great power, were unwilling to take the risk of entering the capital to save the tomb, which led to a silence and evasion on the matter.
