Empowering Social Science Research with Artificial Intelligence:Generative Agents,Complex Causal Analysis, and Human-Machine Collaboration
Artificial intelligence(AI),as the principal tool in the emerging"fifth para-digm"of scientific research, necessitates a re-examination and active development of the relationship between human and machine intelligence in social sciences. This article ex-plores AI's transformative impact on social science research, drawing from pioneering exper-iments and discoveries. It identifies three critical directions for AI's influence.First,AI,as a"generative agent",revolutionizes the methods and scope of observing and intervening in social science research.Second, automated causal analysis by AI enhances the under-standing of complex social causal systems and addresses previously unanswerable questions.Third,human-machine collaborative research integrates AI throughout the research process, accelerating scientific innovation. These transformations, while universally impactful, will vary in form, rhythm, and pathway according to the specific characteristics of each social science field.By discussing three fundamental impacts on the field of international rela-tions,this article aims to stimulate further discussions and innovative explorations of Al-en-abled research across various social sciences.
