Over the past few years, the internationalization of higher education has experienced changes such as the transformation of the education model, changes in the international mobility of students, increased attention to internationalization in the field, and the rising importance of carbon neutrality in higher education, and has faced problems of increased inequality,as well as new crises brought about by geopolitical tensions and knowledge security, among others.International higher education should return to its traditional values and leverage the power of academia to address the main challenges through its three missions, which include paying more attention to carbon neutrality, enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of academic mobility, focusing on the internationalization of domestic curricula, regarding digitization as an integrative dimension of education and research rather than as a substitute, and fostering egalitarian academic collaborations to support global academic engagement based on the shared academic values of inclusiveness, autonomy, and academic freedom.
