Trends,Motivations and Challenges of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination Candidates'Progression to Mainland China for Further Studies
In recent years, there has been an increasingly significant trend for Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination(HKDSE)candidates to go to Chinese mainland to their further studies. The article provides an in-depth understanding of the reasons behind this trend from the perspective of push-pull theory. The study found that the primary reasons for HKDSE candidates to pursue further studies in the mainland are that some students'English scores do not meet the standard, the attractiveness of Hong Kong's sub-degrees has declined, and Hong Kong's university environment has been affected by"social incidents".Reasons include the country's vigorous promotion of the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, forming the geographical advantage of close ties between Hong Kong and the mainland;the high-quality resources of mainland universities have formed an increasingly perfect talent training system, and scholarships provided by the government and society have increased educational opportunities for Hong Kong students. With the continuous strengthening of pull factors,it is expected that more Hong Kong candidates will go to the mainland to study, bringing new opportunities and challenges to mainland universities. To this end,the relevant mainland government departments should strengthen policy guidance to attract Hong Kong students to apply for higher education in the northeast, northwest, southwest and other regions,as well as improve the core competitiveness of applicants for the HKDSE,and enhance the flexibility for Hong Kong students to change their major subject after the HKDSE,and enhanced publicity so as to enable Hong Kong students to have a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of mainland universities.
