Conceptual Evolution and Transfer:A Cognitive Analysis of Jane Knight's Ideas on Educational Internationalization
This study employs cognitive metaphor analysis to systematically examine the evolution of Jane Knight's cognitive metaphors in her research on the internationalization of higher educational over a period of 30 years(1994-2024).Based on the systematic analysis of 91 key publications by Knight, the study constructs a 2 x2 metaphorical analysis framework with two dimensions:"structural-relational"and"static-dynamic".The findings reveal four stages in the evolution of her metaphors:from structural/static metaphors like"pillars"and"foundations"to structural/dynamic metaphors emphasizing"flow"and"paths",then to relational/static metaphors focusing on"networks"and"nodes",and finally to relational/dynamic metaphors such as"knowledge diplomacy"and"ecosystem".This evolution reflects the development trend of higher education internationalization, from an emphasis on infrastructure construction to a focus on relationship network building, and from static management to dynamic adaptation. The study demonstrates that internationalization requires not only solid organizational frameworks but also sustainable partnerships and strategic flexibility to adapt to global changes. The research contributes to the application of conceptual metaphor theory in educational studies and provides new insights into the complexity of educational internationalization.
