The Structure of American Higher Education:Practical Logic for the Dual Orientation of"Excellence"and"Accessibility"
The core challenge in the popularization of higher education lies in balancing the dual pursuit of"excellence"and"accessibility".The United States is the first country in the world to enter the stage of higher education popularization.Since reaching this stage over 40 years ago,the structure of American higher education has not undergone major restructuring or disruptive changes, but has instead adapted flexibly to changes in societal needs through moderate adjustments. This approach has proven effective, achieving a successful integration of"excellence"and"accessibility".This paper uses statistical analysis to examine the evolution and adjustment of the multi-level structure, institutional structure and subject structure of American higher education during the popularization stage. Then,it compares these trends with data from the United Kingdom,France,Germany,Japan and other countries to identify common patterns in the evolution of higher education structures in the popularization phase. It provides valuable insights for China in promoting the integration of"excellence"and"accessibility",responding to the changes in societal needs, adhering to the principles of multi-level and diversification, and striving to build top-notch advantages.
