Lev Gumilev was a well-known Russian ethnologist, whose Eurasianism theory aimed to solve the problems of Russia's national identity, historical roots and development path, and has a strong social influence in Russia, which makes Russian President Vladimir Putin repeatedly apply Gumilev's views in the political discourse of the country's"Eastward"strategy. From the perspective of the history of ethnological theory and thought, this paper traces the origin and evolution of Gumilev's Eurasianism theory, introduces his discussion of ethnic relations in Eurasian space and time through concepts such as"complementarity"and"passion",and analyzes the meaning of Gumilev's Eurasianism in contemporary Russian political discourse, especially in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
