The 2021 riot tore open the rift in race relations in South Africa, exacerbating the identity issue of South Africans of Indian descent. As a disspora group, subjected to the identity differences caused by the caste system,South African Indians are not a self-contained race, but gradually formed through continuous resistance and unity in the process of coping with white racial discrimination and African racial violence.Under the apartheid system,South African Indians,as a diaspora group, gradually got rid of their different identities based on caste, and eventually formed a racial minority group characterized by"South Africa"because of an integrated racial identity, that is,South African Indians. In the post-apartheid era, although new South Africa tries to build a non-racial society,South African Indians,as a racial minority group, face a dilemma in the"de-racialization"of their Indian identity due to the difficulties of social transformation in South Africa and the Indian government's active diaspora policy among other internal and external factors, which not only affects the identity of South African Indians, but also renders multiple uncertainties to the relationship between South African Indians and South African blacks.
