Ryukyu has survived the period of independent kingdom(1429-1879),the period of Japanese colonial rule(1879-1945),the period of American occupation(1945-1972),and the period of Japanese administration(1972-present).On May 15,1972,the United States transferred administration of the Ryukyu Islands to Japan, ending its 27 years of occupation. However, the Ryukyu people who returned to Japanese administration continued to promote their Anti-Japanese Movement or Ryukyu Independent Movement,to regain and strengthen their historical memory,in order to highlight the uniqueness of their own ethnicity. In contemporary Okinawa, there is a significant turn towards"Ryukyu"in the social trend of thought, with the basic characteristics of identity reconstruction by marginal ethnic groups in the post-colonial period. As a"response"to the"impact"brought by long-term differentiated treatment and tragic historical experience, the Okinawans began to think about their own Japanese identity and Ryukyu identity, which has spawned a wave of Ryukyu identity construction.Ryukyu identity evolves in accordance with their own interests, and it is strengthened again every time it is oppressed. It is embodied in four core features:the re-inventionof traditional symbols, the re-establishment of discourse system, the re-display of ethnic characteristics, and the re-memory of glorious history.
