Enterprise Digital Transformation,Supply Chain Spillover and Labor Skill Preference
With the deep application of digital technology, the vertical correlation between the upstream and downstream of the supply chain is becoming increasingly prominent. However, current research mainly focuses on the reverse effect of downstream enterprises on upstream enterprises, but pays less attention to the leading and driving role of upstream enterprises on downstream enterprises. It is worth conducting in-depth research on whether and how the digital transformation behavior of upstream enterprises can trigger the labor employment decision response of downstream enterprises. This article takes A-share listed companies as research samples, and systematically examines the impact and mechanism of digital transformation of upstream enterprises on labor skill preference of downstream enterprises. The results reveal that digital transformation of upstream enterprises enhances the labor skill preference of downstream enterprises.Heterogeneity analysis shows that when downstream enterprises are non-state-owned,have high supply chain dependence, and are located in a region with low market segmentation, the digital transformation of upstream enterprises has a more significant labor skill preference effect on downstream enterprises.Mechanism testing shows that the digital transformation effect of downstream enterprises actively learning and the cost saving effect of external transaction reduction are important mechanisms by which upstream digital transformation affects downstream enterprises'preference for high skilled labor.Further analysis shows that the digital transformation of upstream enterprises results in a bidirectional polarization of the overall employment scale of labor skill structure in downstream enterprises.Although this increases the labor cost of downstream enterprises,it does not constitute wage pressure and operational burden. On the contrary, the assistance of high-tech labor has improved the operational performance, productivity, and innovation performance of downstream enterprises. The marginal contribution of this article are as follows.First, unlike existing research that mainly focuses on the impact of digital transformation within enterprises, this article focuses on the impact of upstream enterprise digital transformation on downstream enterprise labor skill preference. This research perspective not only helps to deepen the understanding of the interactive behavior of upstream and downstream enterprises, but also supplements the empirical evidence that digital transformation of enterprises promotes the coordinated development of supply chains.Secondly, literature on the factors influencing changes in the employment structure of enterprises has been expanded.Similar studies have mostly discussed the application of artificial intelligence, development of information technology, and use of industrial robots, but there is a lack of exploration on the digital transformation of enterprises. This article is a useful supplement to the factors affecting changes in the employment structure of enterprises.Thirdly, the existing research on the spillover effects of enterprise digital transformation supply chain only reveals the contagion effects and mechanisms of customer company digital transformation. On the one hand,as the initial end of the entire industry chain, the upstream has strong bargaining power and monopoly power. How the behavior of upstream enterprises is transmitted to the downstream actually has more value in mining. On the other hand, the research focus of existing literature is still limited to the interaction between digital transformation of upstream and downstream enterprises, and has not expanded the examination of economic effects to the employment structure of enterprises. The conclusion drawn in this article clarifies the logic behind the forward spillover effects of digital transformation in upstream enterprises. This article provides useful insights for improving the supply chain collaboration mechanism and optimizing the labor employment structure of enterprises.First, optimizing the human capital structure of enterprises requires an organic combination of strengthening their own capacity building and deepening vertical cooperation in the supply chain, leveraging the combined effect of 1+1>2.Second,promote the transformation of enterprise digital transformation strategies from"solo"to"group heating",and leverage the advantages of upstream and downstream collaboration in the supply chain.Third, the digital linkage of upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain should be tailored to local conditions and strategies, avoiding rigid methods such as"one size fits all"and"one pot cooking".
