Effect of Novel Intumescent Flame Retardant-Zinc Borate System on Flame Retardancy of Polystyrene
To enhance the flame retardancy of polystyrene(PS),reducing its heat and smoke release during combustion,a novel flame retardant(MAP)was prepared via electrostatic self-assembly,and the new intumescent flame retardant(N-IFR)composed of MAP-polyphosphoric ammonium(APP)-pentaerythritol(PER)was compounded with zinc borate(ZB)and added to PS.The results showed that the limiting oxygen index of PS-22%N-IFR/1%ZB composites increased to 28.3%,achieving UL-94 V-0 rating in vertical burning tests.Compared to pure PS,the peak heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production decreased by 67.6%,11.8%and 25.9%,respectively.The synergistic flame retardant effect of ZB and N-IFR promoted the formation of a high-quality char layer and effectively suppressed the heat and smoke release of the PS.
