Buddhist Birthday:Poetry Creation and Its Significance in the History of Buddhist Literature
In the history of Chinese Buddhism, the content of folk Buddhism is extremely rich.Among them, one of the folk customs closely related to ancient social life is Buddhist birthday, which mainly refers to birthdays celebrated by Buddhist activities(including immortal birthday). As far as the creation of classi-cal poetry is concerned,it can be roughly divided into two periods:one is from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang and Five Dynasties, and the other is the Song,Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties. The former focuses on the emperor and his important officials. While the latter expands to various social classes and forms three enduring themes of human ethics and morality, namely, loyalty to officials, love of family members, and trust from teachers and friends. The outstanding significance of this kind of works in the his-tory of Buddhist literature is mainly reflected in two aspects:from the point of view of life and death,al-though Buddhism is the center,it can integrate Confucianism and Taoism. In terms of subject matter,it has greatly expanded the depth and breadth of female Buddhist life and belief.
