"Differentiating between Bannermen and Commoners,rather than between Manchus and Han":Revisiting the"Bannerman-Commoner Boundary"Perspective in the Study of the Relationship between Manchu and Han in the Qing Dynasty
The"bannerman-commoner boundary"perspective is highly regarded in the study on the relationship between Manchu and Han in the Qing Dynasty,but scholars debate over the nature of the"ban-nerman-commoner boundary."Influenced by the discourse of"differentiating between bannermen and com-moners,rather than between Manchus and Han,"some scholars are accustomed to a"dualistic"viewpoint of the"bannerman-commoner boundary."However,many studies have demonstrated that the nature of"bannerman-commoner boundary"is far from being"dualistic"—it can be even"dyadic"under some cir-cumstances.After analyzing various viewpoints,the author contributes to the existing scholarship by propos-ing several approaches of re-thinking the"bannerman-commoner boundary"perspective.
