On the Manchu Genealogies of the Eight Banners of the Qing Dynasty Collected in the National Library
The genealogies of the Eight Banners formed in the early Qing Dynasty are mostly written in Manchu, which can be sorted into official and private according the the nature and function. The official genealogies are mainly used for the inheritance of the official titles and positions and the household manage-ment of the Eight Banners with an obvious official nature, and they come down in the same line with the mil-itary official selection documents of the Ming Dynasty.Private genealogies are mainly a spontaneous clan building behavior of the bannermen under the influence of traditional Chinese patriarchal concept to achieve the purpose of respecting ancestors and uniting clan. The genealogy of the Eight Banners plays an important role in the study of the administrative system of the Eight Banners in the Qing Dynasty, the chang-es of the society and culture of the bannermen and the construction and development of the Eight Banners'clan organizations.Different from the later Chinese version of the Eight Banners'genealogies, the Manchu version contains relative primitive information as an historical document with unique value.
