Semiotic Reinterpretation of the Term"Lu Hai"in"Yu Shi Ming Yan"
In Feng Menglong's Stories Old and New,one may read the word"luhai"(literally translated as land-sea),which is recurrent in classical texts since the Han Dynasty.However,compared with its presence in other classical texts(or in prose),the use of the"luhai"in Stories Old and New is nuanced.But exegetes ignore the literariness of the word and too simply interpret it as"land".In this article,we try to carry out our own analysis from a semiotic perspective.The first thing that we do is to undertake a diachronic review of its uses in those texts and then insist upon the context in which it occurred.From the analysis of the context,we may carry out a detailed study of the metaphorical relation between lu and hai,which shows that the contextual semes of the poetry renew the usage of the two characters and give them other rhetorical and literary attributes than in precedent texts.
