Ameliorating Effect of Iron-Rich Rice on Rats with Iron Deficiency Anemia
Objective:Iron deficiency anemia(IDA)is one of the more serious nutritional problems.Generally, the iron content of rice does not exceed 2.0 mg per kilogram. The iron content of a certain brand of rice selected in the study was 5.33 mg/kg,which was 2-3 times higher than ordinary rice. The iron-rich rice was mixed into the feed to prepare 55%iron-rich rice feed(iron-rich rice replaces the starch in the normal feed). To evaluate the effect of the iron-rich rice on IDA rats. Methods:An IDA rat model was established by giving low-iron diet combined with regular tail clipping and bloodletting.Healthy rats of the same age fed with normal diet were selected as the blank control group, and IDA rats were randomly divided into normal diet group, positive control group,low-iron diet group and iron-rich rice diet group. At the end of the experiment, the growth and posture of the animals were observed, and the organ index, hemoglobin(Hb),serum iron(SI),liver and spleen iron contents of each group of animals were measured. Results:Compared with the normal diet group, the body weight of the iron-rich rice diet group was significantly increased, heart and spleen indices were significantly decreased(P<0.05),and the level of Hb was significantly increased(P<0.05).In addition, the iron content in SI,liver and spleen of the iron-rich rice diet group was significantly higher than that of the normal diet group(P<0.05).Conclusion:The iron-rich rice can improve the anemia of IDA rats.
