Relationship between intake of sweet pastries and sugar-sweetened beverages and hyperuricemia among college freshmen in a certain university
Objective To obtain the prevalence of hyperuricemia(HUA)among college freshmen and explore if HUA is re-lated to intake frequency of sweet pastries and sugar-sweetened beverages(SSBs).Methods The 2022 freshmen of a uni-versity in Beijing were selected as the research subjects by cluster sampling from September 10 to October 9,2022.Basic information of freshmen and their lifestyle information during the past year were obtained with electronic questionnaires, the relationship between HUA and intake frequency of sweet pastries and SSBs was analyzed with multiple linear regres-sion and logistic regression by combining the physical examination data of freshmen. Results A total of 2077 freshmen aged 19 to 31 were included in the study, including 616 males and 1461 females and 38.76%of them were detected HUA.Compared with the freshmen who seldom or hardly took sweet pastries after adjusting for confounding factors, the blood uric acid level(β=0.042,95%CI:0.013-0.072,P=0.011)and the risk of developing HUA(OR=1.522,95%CI:1.040-2.226,P=0.005)increased in freshmen who consumed sweet snacks ≥4 times/week.The intake frequency of SSBs had no effect on the increase of uric acid(β=0.030,95%CI:-0.001-0.059,P=0.051)and the risk of HUA(OR=1.299,95%CI:0.887-1.903,P=0.179).Conclusion The intake frequency of sweet pastries was positively correlated with the risk of HUA among freshmen and the intake frequency of SSBs was not related to HUA among fresh-men.
