Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Social Response to Droughts in Guizhou During the Qing Dynasty
Drought is a major natural hazard to agricultural production in Guizhou.A total of 108 droughts oc-curred in Guizhou province during the Qing Dynasty,and the frequency,scope and depth of droughts during this pe-riod were all higher than those of the previous dynasties,and they had unique characteristics in time and space.From the perspective of time,the droughts in Guizhou during the Qing Dynasty had an obvious increasing trend in the fluctuation change,and even the drought years and the scope of the disaster gradually increased on the whole,while spring and summer were the seasons when drought occurred frequently.Spatially,droughts were mainly con-centrated in the eastern,central,and northern parts of the province.In response to the drought situation in Guizhou during the Qing Dynasty,the government established a system of storing grains,opening canals and weirs to pre-vent drought,distributing money and grains,setting up altars to pray for rains to relieve the victims,reducing or exempting the amount of taxes,and lowering grain prices to relieve the people's hardship before,during,and after the disaster.
