Modern Research on the Sophists and Its Two Directions
Before Hegel re-evaluated the Sophists,the status of the Sophists had not been high due to Plato's evalua-tion.But since Hegel,the Sophists have received renewed attention from Western academic circles.If Hege'ls evalua-tion of the Sophists was from a philosophical perspective,then Grot'es subsequent evaluation of the Sophists was a po-litical affirmation of the Sophists.Subsequently,these two directions of interpretation of the Sophists have been ad-vanced and developed to varying degrees.The most famous ones in the philosophical direction are the reflections of Nietzsche and Heidegger based on the critique of modernity.The political direction is still based on the vindication of liberal democratic ideology.Therefore,in terms of these two directions,the achievements of the philosophical one de-serve more attention,and the rise of the Sophist status in modern times is undoubtedly closely related to the unfolding of modernity.
