High-level openness to the outside world is a crucial pathway for advancing technological innovation.As a new form of international openness advocated by China,the"Belt and Road"Initiative has significantly impacted economic development,foreign trade,and technological innovation in Chinese cities along its routes.This study employs the"Belt and Road"Initiative as a quasi-natural experiment and utilizes the difference-in-differences method to explore the impact and mechanisms of the Initiative implementation on green technology innovation in Chinese cities along its routes.The study finds that the"Belt and Road"Initiative significantly promotes green technology innovation in Chinese cities along its routes.This conclusion holds after various robustness tests.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the"Belt and Road"Initiative effectively promotes green technology innovation in the central and eastern regions of China,central cities along the route,node cities along the route,non-resource-based cities,and cities with stringent environmental regulations.The analysis of impact mechanisms indicates that the"Belt and Road"Initiative primarily promotes urban green technology innovation by optimizing industrial structure,enhancing human capital,and advancing technological innovation.Based on these findings,this paper proposes policy recommendations to foster urban green technology innovation.
