Review of the effects of land use/cover change on soil organic carbon dynamic in arid and semi-arid areas
Soil is an important part of terrestrial ecosystem carbon pool. The small change of soil carbon pool not only affects nutrient supply to vegetation, but also affects soil carbon emission and exacerbates global climate change.Land use/cover change is an important factor affecting soil carbon storage and soil carbon emission. It is of great significance to examine the effects of different land use/cover change on soil carbon for improving regional soil carbon storage and ecological environment. We summarized the research progress of soil organic carbon dynamics in arid and semiarid areas in China, systematically described the impacts of land use/cover change on soil carbon pool and soil carbon emission, and identified the main factors influencing soil organic carbon dynamics under land use/cover change.Less attention has been paid to the effects of land use/cover change caused by urban construction and urban expansion on soil carbon dynamic, which limits our comprehensive understanding of the effects of land use/cover change on soil carbon. Therefore, future research should pay more attention to the impacts of land use/cover change on soil organic carbon dynamics during urbanization in the context of climate change, especially in the hot spots of land use change in arid and semi-arid areas.In-depth study of these issues will improve our understanding of soil carbon dynamics under land use/cover change in arid and semi-arid areas and provide theoretical basis for scientific utilization and protection of limited soil resources, formulating sustainable land use programs, increasing soil carbon sequestration potential, and mitigating soil carbon emissions.
