Analysis of oxidative stress levels in blood of children with autism and intellectual disability
[Objective]To find potential biomarkers that can distinguish between autism spectrum disorder(ASD)and intel-lectual disability(ID).[Method]Plasma and serum samples were collected from the recruited children with ASD and ID.Ni-trite,nitrate,malondialdehyde(MDA),and total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)were detected by nitric oxide analyzer, high performance liquid chromatography, and ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The differences of oxidative stress indexes between ASD and ID were compared.[Result]In plasma, nitrite was significantly higher in ASD children than in ID children.Nitrate,MDA,and T-AOC were not significantly different between the two groups.Serum nitrite, nitrate,MDA,and T-AOC were not signifi-cantly different between ASD and ID children. There was a significant positive correlation between nitrate and T-AOC in plas-ma and serum, but no correlation between nitrite and MDA in serum and plasma.[Conclusion]There were differences in oxida-tive stress levels between children with ASD and ID,and plasma nitrite levels can be used as a potential biomarker to distin-guish between the two disorders.
