Central Plains Fashion and Local Leadership——On the Influence of Dunhuang Family Grottoes on Grottoes Construction in the Early Tang Dynasty
In the early Tang Dynasty,the Dunhuang family represented by Zhai,Yin and Li created several family caves in Mogao Grottoes.The newly emerged mural themes such as illustration of Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra,illustration of Usnisa Vijaya Dharani Sutra,were strongly exhibited Central Plains characteristics and closely related to the Central Plains.The new statue themes and thoughts with Central Plains fashions appearing in the big family caves,as the latest and most popular Buddhist content in the Central Plains at that time,due to the social status and influence of the big families in Dunhuang,are pursued by believers.The mu-rals which have the same styles and drafts as those of the family caves were widely used in later grottoes,and had a profound impact on the construction of Dunhuang grottoes.
