Introduction to Agamemnon and Humboldt's View of Translation
Humboldt translated Agamemnon,an ancient Greek tragedy,into German in 1816.In the introduction to the transla-tion,Humboldt expounds his views on translation behavior and the role of the translator based on his own philosophical thinking about language and translation experience.Compared with Humboldt's other works on the philosophy of language,Introduction to Agamemnon presents Humboldt's translation ideas intuitively and completely,including three perspectives:deequivalence,the prin-ciples and goals of translation and the meaning of retranslation.These views form Humboldt's core guiding ideology of translatolo-gy,which interacts with Humboldt's view of language,and has exerted many influences on contemporary linguistics and translation theory.
