A Study of the Military Towns under the Jurisdiction of Hedong Jiedushi in the Early Tang Dynasty
The area north of Bingzhou under the jurisdiction of Hedong Jiedushi was the front line of the Tang Dynasty to resist Beidi. In order to consolidate the border defense, the Tang Dynasty set up military towns in this area. These military towns formed three defensive lines in the area north of Bingzhou to resist the southward invasion of Beidi:the front line was composed of Hengye Army,Datong Army, and Yunzhong Shouzhuo, facing the attack of Beidi directly; The midline was composed of Daizhou,Xinzhou,Lanzhou, and Kelan Army, serving as the gateway to Bingzhou; The rear line was the Tianbing Army, and its encampment was the core of the entire defense system. After Jingyun, the Tang Dynasty set up Hedong Jiedushi to govern all military towns, further strengthening and consummating the defense system in the north of Bingzhou.
