The Carving Techniques and Artistic Characteristics of Offering Bodhisattva Statues in Cave 8 of Yungang Grottoes
The offering Bodhisattva statues in Yungang Grottoes are famous for their rich cultural connotation and unique artis-tic style.The features of the Bodhisattva statues on both sides of the open window in the back room of Cave 8 include their unique expressions and modeling styles.The carving techniques are high relief and low relief,and the artistic style mainly integrates Bud-dhist art elements from Western countries.On the west side of the Ming window,the Buddha offering Bodhisattva with open teeth is like the only Buddha offering Bodhisattva withopen smile in the Yungang Grottoes.Its gentle smile,toothy image and dimples on the cheeks are unique among the Buddha statues in the Yungang Grottoes.It not only shows the skilled carving skills of the ancient Yun-gang Grottoes artisans,but also highlights the historical fact of the integration of Chinese and western cultures 1,500 years ago.
