A Study of"Trend of Combination"from"25 Poems by Qu Yuan"to Liu Xiang's Compilation of Chu Ci:Also on the Second Source of Its Current Edition
Tang Bingzheng posits that the compilation of Chu Ci spanned five stages,as has shifted the research focus of this topic to the period from Song Yu to Liu An,contributing significantly to the research direction, albeit with a conclusion that merits further discussion. The incorporation of his own works, including Chou Si,She Jiang,Tian Wen,Yuan You,Si Mei Ren,Xi Wang Ri and Li Sao by Qu Yuan himself,as well as the frequent citation and comments on his works by Song Yu,Jia Yi,Sima Qian, and Dongfang Shuo, which are distributed across five, six, four, and five volumes respectively out of the seven surviving volumes, suggests the early existence of a"Collection of Qu Yuan"including 25 poems, potentially compiled by Qu Yuan himself.Furthermore, according to Sima Qian's Qu Yuan Lie Zhuan and Dongfang Shuo's Qi Jian,it is evident that the imitation poems by Song Yu and others in the extant Chu Ci have formed an intricate"network of relationships"centered on Qu Yuan and his oeuvre.Consequently,Liu Xiang's compilation of Chu Ci is likely grounded in this"Collection of Qu Yuan"and its associated"network of relationships",undergoing a process of integration, refinement and adjustment. In terms of adjustment,Liu Xiang was primarily influenced by Sima Qian, adhering to two key principles in handling the texts:chronological arrangement and reselection according to the theme of"mourning his aspirations".In addition,he also introduced the writing standard of"speaking on behalf of Qu Yuan".
