Basic Characteristics of Steel Slag and Its Application in Pavement Base Layer
China has a huge stock of steel slag with complex compositions and a low utilization rate, occupying a large amount of land and polluting the environment. This paper conducted an experimental study of the basic characteristics of the steel slag and the mechanical characteristics of the cement-stabilized steel slag from a steel mill in Shanxi Province to analyze the mineral compositions, expansibility, crushing value, and pulverization rate. The cement-stabilized steel slag with different ratios was prepared, the optimal water content and maximum dry density were determined by compaction test, and the 7-d unconfined compressive strength was tested. The study results showed that at the cement dosage of 5%,the steel slag mixture's optimal water content was 6.43%,the maximum dry density was 2.54 g/cm3,and the 7-d unconfined compressive strength was 6.48 MPa,with an optimal compaction effect. The basic characteristics of the steel slag and the compressive strength of the cement-stabilized steel slag all met the specification requirements, which can be used in the pavement base layer with most highway grades and traffic load grades.
