John Keill's Elements of Geometry from the Perspective of Geometry Education Reform
At the beginning of the 18th century, geometry education reform centered on Euclid's Elements of Geometry was taking place in the UK.Keill's Elements of Geometry was compiled with the aim of restoring Euclid's Elements by John Keill,Professor of Oxford, which caused a"contradiction"with mathematics educators who boldly pursued reform. The"contradiction"maintained the status of the traditional Euclid's Elements in geometry education;at the same time,it inspired people to reflect on the reform of geometry education.Keill's Elements highlights three features:getting rid of the verbosity and complexity which have been represented by a large number of annotations for a long time;supplementing axioms and proofs to make the proofs more rigorous and the content system more systematic;creating a three-dimensional geometric model and setting up plane graphics on a single page for the proposition. Therefore, whether taking Keill's Elements as a historical culture or as a textbook,it will give new inspirations for the development of today's mathematics education.
