A Comparative Study of Illustrations in Secondary School Mathematics Textbooks between China and France
In mathematics textbooks,illustrations can facilitate students learning.Comparison on the illustrations in mathematics textbooks at home and abroad can help understand its current situation and provide a reference for the design of mathematics textbooks in China.This study focuses on the types and functions of illustrations,comparing the three editions of secondary school mathematics textbooks in China and France.It is found that the two editions of textbooks in China are relatively consistent in the distribution of illustration types and function,whereas the textbooks in China and France are obviously different.The illustrations of the two domestic editions are mainly technical drawings,whereas French Belin version is mainly cartoons.The principal functions of the illustrations in two domestic editions are text supplement and text presentation,whereas in Belin version,the distribution of functions is balanced,and it has more illustrations for themes introduction and concepts understanding.When designing Chinese mathematics textbooks in the future,it is suggested that the types of illustrations can be optimized.Also,we need to enrich the illustration in chapter frontispiece and excavate the effect of illustrations.
