A Study on"China"Identity in the Context of a Unitary and Multi-ethnic State During the Qin and Han Dynasties
The fundamental mechanism for the unprecedented development of the"China"identity dur-ing the Qin and Han Dynasties was that the increasing consciousness of belonging by four descendants,which was in the political environment of a unitary and multi-ethnic state and the context of"One Family Un-der the World".The residents from the various regions and ethnic groups in the east,west,south,and north were successively compiled to the Qin People and Han People as the general designation under the adminis-trative system of prefectures and counties.This implied that the residents of all ethnic groups within the terri-tory of the Qin and Han Dynasties had been mutually identified and achieved an unprecedented national uni-ty,which embodied the omnidirectional identification in the dimensions of politics,economy,and culture to-ward the China represented by the Qin and Han Dynasties by the residents from the various regions of our states.This was a favourable turn with milestone significance appeared in the development process of the state form,national connotation and relationship pattern of ancient China.This has an important foundation significance to condense the consciousness of Chinese national community for future generations,which di-rectly appeared as an unified national community having an unprecedented scale and the boundaries of the imperial territory.
