A Research on the Naming of "Zhuyu Mountain"(朱圉山)and "Yanzi Mountain"(崦嵫山)and the Qin People's Westward Migration
The Xi'nian《系年》)of Tsinghua's Bamboo Slips mentions that King Cheng of Zhou"westward migrated the people of Shanggai to Zhuyu",identifying them as ancestors of the Qin.This"Zhuyu"(邾圉)is"Zhuyu"(朱圉),referring to Zhuyu Mountain in the southwest of Tianshui,Gangu. The characters"Zhu"(邾)and"Zhu"(朱)are interchangable, hence the"Zhu"(朱)in Zhuyu Mountain is also"Zhu"(邾),referring to"Zhulou".Early Zhulou clans lived in the eastern area, and some migrated westward to the vicinity of Zhuyu Mountain after being defeated. The term"Zhuyu"thus means a settlement area for the Zhulou people. In myth and legend, the Yanzi Mountain is Zhuyu Mountain, with"Yanzi"implying a place where the eastern tribes congregated. Both the names"Zhuyu Mountain"and"Yanzi Mountain"reflect the collective memory of the westward migration of the Zhulou people. The worship of the phoenix bird by the Qin and the eastern tribes is the embodiment and transformation of the surname"Feng"(风)of Fuxi and Eight Diagrams.Fuxi culture originated in the area around Long Mountain, flourished in west region of Hangu Pass and the middle reaches of the Yellow River, and spread to all directions along with the eastern tribes after the war between Yan and Huang.Regardless of tribal divisions or migrations, the symbol of Fuxi's Eight Diagrams,is always recognizable. The eastern tribes who migrated westward to Zhuyu Mountain painstakingly endeavoured in the birthplace of Fuxi culture and ultimately achieved significant development and expansion. The case of the migration and origin of the Qin people in the early period of the Chinese nation's diversification and fusion reflects the characteristic and evolutionary pattern of"diversity within unity"of the Chinese civilization.
