Influence factors of separation of emulsions by materials with special wettability
Self-developed stainless steel mesh screens with special wettability were used, and the effects of temperature, filtration pressure,pH,water-oil ratio, and emulsifier amount on the separation of oil-water emulsions by materials with special wettability were investigated. The results show that the lower temperature is favorable for the separation of water-in-oil(W/O)and oil-in-water(O/W)emulsions by single-layer and double-layer mesh screens, and the lower filtration pressure is favorable for the separation of W/O emulsions, but the higher pressure will directly affect the hydrophobicity of the mesh screens. In addition, the separation mechanism of the double-layer mesh screens determines that the separation is not possible under low filtration pressures. The higher pressure is more favorable for the separation of O/W emulsions by a double-layer mesh screen.Low pH is beneficial to the separation of both types of emulsions, and the separation effect decreases with the increase in pH;with the increase in water content of the W/O emulsions, the separation effect of single-layer mesh screen decreases, and the occupation of water on the surface of hydrophobic mesh screen leads to a rapid increase in the resistance of oil passing through the mesh screen or even makes the oil unable to pass through. With the rise of oil content in W/O emulsions, the separation effect of the double-layer mesh screen shows a rising trend, which is related to the decrease in the chances of secondary oil-water mixing caused by the decrease in the water content;the increase in emulsifier amount leads to stability enhancement of the emulsion and is detrimental to the separation of both types of emulsions.
