A Paratextual Study on The Analects of Confucius by Roger T.Ames
The paratext is an indispensable part of the translated text.It plays a crucial role in effectively transmitting connotations of the original text.Ames employs rich paratexts in the translated version of The Analects of Confucius. The paratexts before the translation of the original text offer a detailed explanation of the historical, linguistic and philosophic background related to its connotational understanding. The in-text annotations in the translated text demonstrate the translators'self-consciously interpretative strategy. The commentary annotations, appendixes and references after the translation of the original text further strengthen the academic value of the translated version of The Analects of Confucius.Based on these functions of the paratexts, five suggestions are put forward for the application of the paratexts in translating Chinses classics in order to facilitate their overseas dissemination.
