Simulation the Influence of Homogeneity in Asphalt Mixtures on Uniaxial Penetration Test Using Discrete Element Method
In order to investigation the micromechanical performance of asphalt mixture uniaxial pene-tration tests(UPT),the two-dimension discrete element models(DEM)of UPT with real aggregate boundaries were established based on digital image processing.Combined with the aggregate homoge-neity index, the influence of aggregate vertical distribution on the UPT of asphalt mixtures were nu-merically simulated, and verified by the laboratory tests. Results show that particle discrete element can simulate the UPT of asphalt mixtures, and study the mechanism and physical property of the UPT from a micro perspective. The uniaxial penetration strength of asphalt mixtures is very sensitive to the loading rate, and becomes higher with an increase of the loading rate. There is a good correlation be-tween the aggregate vertical homogeneity and the variation of the uniaxial penetration strength. The better the aggregate vertical homogeneity in asphalt mixtures is,the less the variation of the uniaxial penetration strength of asphalt mixtures is,and vice versa.
