Clinical efficacy of timolol maleate gel combined with 595 nm pulsed dye laser in the treatment of infantile hemangioma
Objective To explore clinical efficacy of timolol maleate gel combined with 595 nm pulsed dye laser in the treatment of infantile hemangioma. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 60 children diagnosed with superficial infantile hemangioma, who were treated at heibei children's hospital from January 2016 to January 2022.According to the treatment method, they were divided into a control group and an observation group, each comprising 30 cases. The control group was treated with 595 nm pulsed dye laser, and the observation group was treated with timolol maleate gel combined with 595 nm pulsed dye laser. The clinical efficacy, total number of laser treatments, and incidence of adverse reactions were then compared between the two groups. The other data were fuether collected and compared pre-and post-treatment between the two groups, including the serum levels of CXC chemokine 12(CXCL12),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),pigment epithelial derived factor(PEDF),angiotensin(Ang),as well as the hemangioma activity scale(HAS),the Chinese version of the iInfant hemangioma specific quality of life questionnaire(IH-QOL)and family members Hamilton anxiety scale(HAMA)scores. Results There was no significant difference in total effective rate between the two groups(P>0.05).The total number of laser treatments, the time of color lightening and the time required for a 50%reduction in area were significantly lower in the observation group compared to the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, the serum levels of CXCL12,VEGF,and Ang,as well as the and HAS,IH-QOL and HAMA scores of family members, were significantly reduced in both groups compared to pre-treatment levels. Moreover, these reductions were more pronounced in the observation group compared to the control group(P<0.05).The serum PEDF levels in both groups were elevated compared to pre-treatment levels, with the observation group exhibiting a significantly higher increase than the control group.(P<0.05).There was no statistical significance in the total incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Timolol maleate gel combined with 595 nm pulsed dye laser can effectively control the development of infantile hemangioma, promote tumor regression, improve the levels of serum-related factors, local symptoms and the quality of life of children and their families, demonstrating safety and reliability.
