Objective To evaluate the results of the Nice knot fixation technique for the treatment of zone Ⅰ fractures of the fifth metatarsal. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the case data of 32 patients with the fifth metatarsal region Ⅰ fracture who were admitted to our hospital from March 2014 to June 2021 and were surgically treated with Nice knot fixation of the fracture. We collected preoperative and postoperative data of the patients and recorded the visual analogue scale(VAS)and American orthopedic foot anile society(AOFAS)functional scores for analysis and evaluation, respectively. Results All 32 patients were followed up for 6-14 months.31 patients had stage Ⅰ incisional healing, and the incisional healing and suture removal time was(17.44±1.81)d.One patient had incisional dehiscence and oozing after suture removal on postoperative day 10,and the incision healed in 2 weeks with continuous dressing changes. The mean incision length was(36.22±3.90)mm,the operative time was(31.41±5.89)min,and the number of intraoperative fluoroscopies was(2.47±0.72)times.Satisfaction with fracture reduction:26 cases were excellent,6 cases were good, the excellent and good rate was 100%,and the time to return to full weight-bearing was(11.97±1.99)weeks.The postoperative VAS score was significantly improved compared to the preoperative one(F=261.261,P<0.001);The AOFAS score at the last follow-up was(92.09±2.56),with good functional recovery. Conclusion Nice knot fixation is simple and effective in the treatment of fifth metatarsal zone Ⅰfractures with satisfactory clinical results.
