Evaluation on the anti-inflammatory effect of two throat-clearing health food formulations with Fritillaria cirrhosa D.Don and Ophiopogonis radix as main ingredients
Objective To evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of two health food formulations for throat clearing with Fritillaria cirrhosa D.Don and Ophiopogonis radix as main ingredients. Methods Two batches of male SD rats were randomly divided into the negative control group(pure water),the positive control group, the low-dose formula A group, the high-dose formula A group, the low-dose formula B group and the high-dose formula B group(each n=12),and then they were continuously gavaged for 30 days. The experiments were conducted according to the Clear Pharyngeal Function Evaluation Method for Health Food, and the net volume of granuloma and the toe swelling rate were calculated. The levels of serum cytokines like interleukin-1β(IL-1β),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),nitric oxide(NO)and total superoxide dismutase(T-SOD)were determined. Results The net volume of granuloma as well as the serum levels of IL-1 β and TNF-α were significantly lower in the high-dose formula B group than in the negative control group(P<0.05).The toe swelling rate at 4 hours was significantly lower in both the low-dose formula A and formula B groups than in the negative control group(P<0.05).The serum level of NO was not statistically different in the positive control group and each dose group compared with the negative control group(P>0.05).The serum level of T-SOD was significantly higher in the high-dose formula B group than in the negative control group(P<0.05).Conclusion The two formulas show different degrees of anti-inflammatory effects in the rat cotton ball implantation experiment and the rat toe swelling experiment, and the anti-inflammatory effect of formula B is superior to that of formula A.The mechanism of action may be related to the reduction of inflammatory factor levels in vivo and the increase of antioxidant capacity.
