Serum 25(OH)D level and its correlation with poor eyesight in primary and secondary school students aged 6-15 years in Hunan Province
Objective To analyze the serum 25(OH)D level and the epidemiological distribution characteristics of vitamin D deficiency among primary and secondary school students aged 6-15 years in Hunan Province, and to explore the correlation between serum 25(OH)D level and poor eyesight among them. Methods Primary and junior middle school students aged 6-15 years in 6 monitored counties in 2021 were selected to test their serum 25(OH)D concentration, vision, height and weight, and collect the information like time spent outdoors during the daytime and time spent using electronic products per day. Results The average serum 25(OH)D content of 1,987 primary and secondary school students aged 6-15 years was 19.49 ng/ml,and the average serum 25(OH)D content was higher in male students than in female ones(20.57 ng/ml vs.18.38 ng/ml,P<0.001).Serum 25(OH)D content decreased with age increasing(P<0.001).Only 46.7%of the students had sufficient serum 25(OH)D.The average content of serum 25(OH)D was significantly lower in obese students than in students with other nutritional levels(P<0.05),as well as significantly lower in students who spent less than 1 hour for outdoor activities during the daytime than in students who spent more than 1 hour for outdoor activities during the daytime(P<0.001).With the increase of school age,the du-ration of outdoor activities during the daytime showed a decreasing trend(P<0.001).The number of poor visual acuity was 49.8%,and the degree of poor visual acuity increased with the increase of school age(P<0.001).The incidence rate of poor visual acuity in students who spent less than 2 hours for outdoor activities during the daytime also increased with the aggravated degree of vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion Serum 25(OH)D level is related to the factors like age, gender, school location, nutritional status, and duration of daytime outdoor activity, and the inadequate serum 25(OH)D level is associated with poor eyesight.
