Prevalence and influencing factors of dwarfism among children aged 6-12 years in Xinyang City
Objective To investigate the prevalence of dwarfism amongst children aged 6-12 years in Xinyang City,to explore the factors influencing dwarfism in the children, and to provide a basis for reducing the prevalence rate of dwarfism and promoting their healthy growth. Methods A total of 1,215 children aged 6-12 years who underwent health check-ups in Xinyang Municipal Central Hospital and Xinyang Maternal and Child Health Hospital from April 2020 to February 2023 were collected as the study subjects.A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the children's general conditions, their heights and weights were measured, their sleep, physical exercise and diet status were assessed, and the prevalence rate of childhood dwarfism was calculated.One-way x2 test and multifactorial logistic regression analysis were applied to analyzing the factors affecting childhood dwarfism. Results A total of 1,215 children were enrolled into this study, including 626 boys and 589 girls, with a mean age of(9.11±2.28)years.Among children aged 6,7,8 and 9 years, the average heights at the same age were significantly higher in the boys than in the girls, showing statistically significant differences(all P<0.05),whereas among children of different sexes aged 10,11 and 12 years, the differences in the heights were not statistically significant(all P>0.05).A total of 63 cases of dwarfism were diagnosed, with the prevalence rate of 5.19%.In the analysis of factors influencing dwarfism,it was found that childhood overweight/obesity and daily sleep deprivation were the risk factors for the occurrence of dwarfism(OR>1,P<0.05),while the frequency of childhood physical exercise ≥3 times per week and proper childhood diet were the protective factors for the occurrence of dwarfism(OR<1,P<0.05).Conclusion The prevalence rate of dwarfism among the children in Xinyang was 5.19%.Parents should keep their children at a healthy weight, urge the children to participate in physical exercise actively, and ensure the children's reasonable diet and enough sleep.Annual health checkups and dwarfism screening should be actively performed among the children, and children with dwarfism should be directed to hospitals for active treatment so as to improve their quality of life.
