Objective To explore the effect of health behavior on scoliosis amongst primary and secondary school students in Jiading District, and to provide a basis for intervention of scoliosis in the students. Methods We monitored a total of 1,663 students selected from two senior high schools, two junior middle schools and two primary schools in Jiading District by stratified random sampling. Results The detection rate of scoliosis among the primary and middle school students in Jiading District was 5.23%.The detection rate was significantly higher in female students than in male ones(6.99%vs.3.54%,x2=10.013,P=0.002).The detection rates in pupils, junior middle school students and senior high school students were 2.11%,4.67%and 8.49%respectively,and they increased with the increment of school stage(x2=20.201,P<0.00 1).The reporting rates of 9 items of health behavior such as diet, physical exercise and sleep decreased with the increase of school stage(P<0.05).Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that having five or more physical education classes per week(OR=0.563)was a protective factor for scoliosis.Female students(OR=2.009),junior middle school students(OR=2.289)and senior high school students(OR=4.244)were positively correlated with the occurrence of scoliosis(P<0.05).Conclusion Students'scoliosis is related to health life behavior. It is necessary to strengthen the guidance of and attention to health behavior among the primary and secondary school students, especially in enhancing the physical exercise intervention among female students, junior middle school students and senior high school students.
