Awareness of knowledge about herpes zoster vaccine and factors influencing vaccination willingness among the middle-aged and elderly in Dongpo District of Meishan City
Objective To investigate the cognition towards herpes zoster(HZ)vaccine and the factors influencing willingness to undergo vaccination among middle-aged and elderly people in Dongpo District of Meishan City,Sichuan Province,and to provide a basis for conducting the work about HZ prevention and control in the local areas.Methods With a convenience sampling method,537 middle-aged and elderly persons who visited 3 community health service centers in Dongpo District of Meishan City,Sichuan Province from January 2020 to October 2022 were selected as the subjects of this survey.Self-designed questionnaires were used to investigate the general information,awareness of knowledge about HZ and HZ vaccine,and willingness to vaccinate against HZ.Chi-square test was employed to compare the differences in willingness to receive HZ vaccination among the middle-aged and elderly with different clinical characteristics.Multi-factor logistic regression analysis was applied to exploring the factors influencing HZ vaccination willingness in the middle-aged and elderly.Results The awareness rates of HZ and HZ vaccine in the 537 middle-aged and elderly persons in this survey were 78.03%and 32.77%respectively,and 45.81%of them were willing to be vaccinated against HZ.The awareness rates of clinical symptoms,etiology and recurrence of HZ were 53.82%,31.84%and 34.82%respectively.The rates of awareness about it that HZ vaccine could prevent the incidence of HZ and HZ recurrence and reduce the clinical symptoms after the onset,and the age for vaccination at 50 years old and above were 47.30%,29.05%,40.04%and 17.13%respectively.The rates of HZ vaccination willingness in middle-aged and elderly persons aged 50-<60 years,with educational background of high school or above,with family per capita monthly income ≥4,000 Yuan,having medical insurance,with a history of suffering from HZ,and with HZ patients around them were higher than those in middle-aged and elderly persons aged≥ 60 years,with educational background of junior middle school or below,with family per capita monthly income<4,000 Yuan,having no medical insurance,having no history of suffering from HZ,and without HZ patients around them,and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05).The results of multi-factor logistic regression analysis displayed that educational background(OR=2.467,95%CI:1.654-3.680),family per capita monthly income(OR=2.284,95%CI:1.556-3.354),having a history of suffering from HZ(OR=3.333,95%CI:2.103-5.284)and surrounding people suffering from HZ(OR=2.809,95%CI:1.833-4.307)were the factors influencing HZ vaccination willingness in the middle-aged and elderly(all P<0.05).Conclusion The middle-aged and elderly in Dongpo District of Meishan City,Sichuan Province had a low awareness of HZ vaccine and a low willingness to get vaccinated.Educational background,family per capita monthly income,having a history of suffering from HZ,and surrounding people suffering from HZ were the factors affecting HZ vaccination willingness in the middle-aged and elderly.Therefore,the government needs to enhance the publicity of HZ vaccination and increase the willingness to vaccinate against HZ.
