After the production of a fiberglass pipeline for surface gathering and transportation in a certain oilfield, wax blockage occurred, seriously affecting the normal production of the oilfield. To clarify the causes and mechanisms of wax formation in fiberglass pipes, samples were taken from three in-service fiberglass pipelines with different degrees of wax formation, and comparative experimental studies were con-ducted,including macroscopic inspection, physical and chemical tests, and wettability analysis. The results showed that there were no sig-nificant differences in the composition structure, resin content, hardness, and curing degree of the three glass fiber reinforced plastic speci-mens,which met the standard requirements of glass fiber reinforced plasticpipe. They all showed a super lipophilic state towards diesel and no significant difference in wettability. The difference in wax deposition degree was mainly caused by the operating temperature of the pipe-line,and low flow rate and low gas-liquid ratio accelerated wax deposition. The waxing mechanism of fiberglass pipes is basically the same as that of steel pipes, which is a molecular diffusion mechanism. However, the critical surface tension, thermal conductivity, and roughness of fiberglass pipes are lower, making them less prone to wax crystal deposition and aggregation, demonstrating better anti-waxing perform-ance.Reducing the surface tension of the pipe and achieving an oil repellent state will be an effective way to improve the anti-waxing per-formance of fiberglass pipes.
