Surgical treatment of limb venous malformations with pain or joint dysfunction
Objective To observe the pain relief or joint function improvement after surgical treatment of limb venous malformation in patients with pain or joint dysfunction, and to explore the short-term efficacy. Methods Forty patients with limb venous malformations complicated with pain or joint dysfunction underwent surgical treatment in Henan Provincial People's Hospital from October 2021 to March 2023,and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. The visual analogue scale(VAS)scores were compared before and 1 month after surgery, the Chinese Medical Association elbow/wrist function score was used to evaluate the upper limb function, the Hospital for Special Surgery(HSS)Knee Score or Kofoed Score for the ankle was used to evaluate the lower limb function, and MRI was performed 6 months after surgery to evaluate the short-term efficacy.Results(1)The surgery was successfully completed in all 40 patients in(166.05±15.68)min,with the intraoperative blood loss of(250.75±23.18)mL,and the length of hospital stay of(10.43±0.36)d.No postoperative complications such as incision infection, subcutaneous hematoma, and lymphatic fistula occurred.(2)The VAS score was lower one month after surgery(1.06±0.81)than that before surgery(4.41± 1.61)(t=14.970,P<0.001).And the upper limb function score of 3 patients with upper limb dysfunction was higher 6 months after surgery(14.67±1.15)than that before surgery(11.67±1.53)(t=-5.200,P=0.035).The lower limb function score of 5 patients with lower limb dysfunction was higher 6 months after surgery(86.00±3.74)than that before surgery(66.80±5.54)(t=-6.650,P=0.003).(3)The follow-up 6 months after surgery showed the efficacy was excellent in 39 patients and good in 1,with the excellent and good rate of 100%.Conclusion Surgical treatment of limb venous malformation in patients with pain or joint dysfunction can maximize the removal of lesions, reduce pain, improve joint function, and have good safety.
