Numerical Simulation Assessment of the Unsaturated Soils Behavior Nearby the Energy Tunnel
Geothermal energy can be utilized by installing heat exchange devices in tunnel lining for heating of cooling for the upper building of the tunnel. But thermal activation can affect the degree of saturation of surrounding soil to cause deformation of water sensitive soil such as expansive soil, which may affect the stress state of the tunnel struc-ture.This study conducted a numerical analysis of heat and moisture transfer in the soil around energy tunnels.A 3D finite element model was developed to study the influence of soil type and groundwater level on the hydraulic behavior of energy tunnels. The influence of soil saturation on heat transfer efficiency was deeply studied. When the ground-water level is higher than the tunnel, the effect of natural convection on heat transfer should be taken into account. When the level is lower than the tunnel,it is not appropriate to assess heat transfer efficiency by the simplified dry assumption. The results can be used for thermal activation evaluation of energy tunnels in unsaturated regions.
