Calculation and Experimental Study on UHPC Reinforcement of the Steel Bridge Deck on the Upper Welding Holes of the Diaphragm
Based on the sub modeling technique of Ansys,a finite element analysis was conducted to calculate the fatigue detail stress at the upper cutouts in both the original steel bridge deck and the composite bridge deck rein-forced with UHPC.The nominal stress at the diaphragm-deck welding detail was found to be the highest, reaching 188.7 MPa,indicating a very high risk of cracking. After reinforcement with the steel-UHPC composite deck, the nominal stress at this detail reduced to 25.4 MPa,a decrease of 86.5%.However,the maximum tensile stress in the UHPC layer reached 14.3 MPa.Consequently, bending tests were conducted on the steel-UHPC composite deck with different reinforcement configurations. The test results showed that the crack resistance strength of UHPC layer is 22.3 MPa for a steel-UHPC composite deck with a reinforcement spacing of 50 mm,with a crack resistance safety factor of 1.56,meeting the crack resistance requirements of actual bridges. These research findings can provide ref-erence for similar engineering projects.
