A Probe into the Multifunctional Usage of the Non-auxiliary Verb Neng(能)in Dialects of North Anhui
In dialects of North Anhui, the non-auxiliary verb neng(能)is mainly used as a verb, adjective and ad-verb.When used as a verb,it has the function of a comprehensive verb, which is equivalent to the verb-object struc-ture in Mandarin. Its overlapping form neng(能)often appears in the topic structure, and semantically is a summary and evaluation of the action in context. As adjectives, due to different contexts,it's meaning can be divided into two types:"positive"and "negative".Both can be suffixed and complemented in syntax. As an adverb,it can only be used as a complement in the two constructions "adjective+de(得)+neng(能)"and "adjective+neng(能)+le(了)",expressing a high degree of meaning, but it cannot be used as an adverbial;the formation "adjective+de(得)+neng(能)"is closely related to the implication of the post-component of "neng",the restriction and influ-ence of the construction, and the semantic deduction of "neng".
